Our experience with Hyena Overland

We’re always on the hunt for gear that not only changes the look of our rig, but performs under the circumstances we much likely put ourselves in :). After completely renovating our Defender it was finally time for the finishing touches; the Hyena Overland bumpers, sliders and accessories! They simply stand out in both design and quality. After installing them and using them on-road and off, here’s our honest review.


Who is Hyena Overland?

Hyena Overland is a Polish manufacturer of heavy-duty overland gear for various Landrovers, Toyota Hilux and Jeep Wrangler. They design bumpers, rock sliders and vehicle accessories designed for serious off-road use. Their products are built from robust materials, thoughtfully engineered and aimed at solving common install problems that overlanders face.


What we tested includes:

  • Rock Sliders / Side Steps
  • Rear Bumper with Spare Wheel carrier & Jerrycan Mount
  • Front Light Guards

These components have completely transformed our rig, both functionally and visually.

MK3 Front Winch Bumper

What we love:

Purposeful engineering: The winch bumper’s extended tray allows space for winches without ruining your grill, something many owners struggle with otherwise.

Versatility: With options for both individual spots or a light bar, you can build the front lighting exactly how you want it.

Safety & function: The rock sliders aren’t just protection. Because of their Innovative aluminium grip type solution, they prevent the foot from slipping in all weather conditions, which makes climbing in and out easier.

Rear set-up: Mounting the spare wheel carrier and tank on the bumper instead of the door means you won’t worry about bending the door hinges or denting the rear door.

Protection and style combined: The light guards tie the whole look together while offering great protection for your headlights.

Build quality: Every piece arrives powder coated and finished to a high standard, clearly made with durability in mind.


Any downsides?

If we have one minor note, they offer some products with the option for aluminium or steel. Aluminium is softer so it will give you less protection. Steel is stronger so it offers more protection, the only thing you will have to keep in mind is that steel is heavier, so it will add weight to your vehicle. That’s expected with heavy-duty bumpers and sliders, but worth factoring into your overall load and suspension tuning. But those aren’t really even downsides for us!

Our experience

From the moment we bolted on the MK3 Front Winch Bumper, it completely changed how our Defender looked and felt. The extended design isn’t just for show, it provides real functional advantage for the winch placement. We’ve experienced the rock sliders with ice and snow and even then you will have to do something extremely crazy to slip off. 

The rear setup was, in one word, impressive! The idea of mounting both arms on the bumper is just brilliant. You can see the quality and the way they’ve thought everything through.


Meeting the Hyena team in Poland was the cherry on top, their passion for overlanding and precision fabrication shines in every component they produce. We’re proud to be part of the Hyena Pack and that we get to look at/use their gear on our rig every day!


Final thoughts

If you’re serious about upgrading your overland vehicle, Hyena Overland’s bumpers, sliders and accessories are absolute winners. They solve all overlander’s problems, look amazing and hold up when the terrain gets tough!
